Attendance guidance for COVID related absences

Attendance guidance for COVID related absences for the 2023-24

  • Students testing positive for COVID may return on the sixth (6th) day after the onset of symptoms or positive test results if symptoms have improved and they are fever free (without medication) for 24 hours.
  • A student’s absence will be marked excused once the parent/guardian provides one of the following:
    • Health Care Practitioner’s Excuse (MD, DO, NP or PA) (Attendance Code “I”);
    • Confirmed positive test result:
    • Positive COVID test report from a laboratory (Attendance Code “I”)
    • A home test providing that the parent/guardian sends a picture of the positive home test with the student’s name and date of the test written on the actual home test. (New Attendance Code “EP”)
  • Should a parent contact the school and say that their student is positive for COVID, but cannot provide a way of proving this, parent notes would be required to excuse the absence(s). GCS policy allows three (3) parent notes per semester. (Attendance Code “A”)
  • Students shall be allowed five (5) days upon return to school to make up work missed for a positive COVID test as outlined in GCS Board Policy 6.200.
